The Potato: Early Adopter of Digital Transformation

Technology didn’t replace the need; it redefined how we met it. 

Higher education stands at a similar inflection point with the emergence of Artificial Intelligence (AI). Organizations must choose between focusing narrowly on short-term costs or taking a forward-looking approach that recognizes the far greater cost of falling short on their core mission. 

Forward-looking institutions that modern technology is no longer a nice-to-have—it is essential to achieving long-term goals. These institutions are investing in AI not to replace educators, but to support them. Such institutions are committed to enhancing the quality and accessibility of education, cultivating an environment conducive to attracting and retaining exceptional educators, maintaining a dynamically workforce-relevant curriculum, and providing comprehensive student support.  

Just as the microwave redefined how we cook without changing what we value, AI has the potential to transform how higher education delivers on its mission, faster, smarter, and with greater impact. 

The True Cost: Beyond the Ledger 

Just like sticking with an old oven for every potato, clinging to outdated technology in your business is costing you more than just money. In 1982, desperate to quickly warm my 4-H twice-baked potato, I ignored the "no microwave" rule in the teacher's lounge. Applying an old-school trick to new tech, I wrapped my spud in foil, and zap! Smoke filled the room.  

My 4-H teacher, Mrs. Goodwin, calmly diffused the crisis. Instead of scolding, she explained electromagnetic waves and why metal and microwaves don't mix. Her guidance transformed my near disaster into a blue-ribbon victory. This incident underscored the vital role of leadership in technology adoption – not just having new but knowing how to properly guide others to use them effectively. 

This little kitchen catastrophe highlights a big truth about adopting new technology: people love to experiment, ready or not.  

Leaders need to recognize this natural pull toward progress. They should offer thorough training and cultivate an environment where innovation thrives. This helps teams embrace new tech with confidence, turning potential pitfalls like data breaches or security risks into valuable opportunities. Just like my "controlled explosion" in the kitchen, guided experimentation can teach powerful lessons and lead to award-winning results. 

Harmonizer or Disruptor: A Symphony of Change 

New technologies can change workflows and processes, possibly leading to disruptions and resistance. However, careful planning, strong stakeholder engagement, and structured, phased deployment can mitigate these challenges. These strategies increase the chances of successful technology adoption and can smooth out disruptions for both stakeholders and students. Change, whether small or transformative, offers a chance for creative problem-solving and freedom from old practices.
